While people are becoming aware of CBD products and their benefits, on the other hand, many people get confused between CBD oils and tinctures. They often use the terms interchangeably. Are they the same? If not, what’s the difference between them? Is it essential to know the difference between them? Well, the answer to all of these questions resides here. This blog will help you understand the complete concept of CBD oils and tinctures so that whenever you are thinking to buy CBD oil tincture that works, you’ll be able to make a better choice. So, let’s get started-

What is CBD?

To better know this concept, it’s essential to understand what CBD is and how it can be helpful to you. Cannabinoid (CBD) is one of the many active, intoxicating, and non-impairing compounds found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. However, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it won’t get you “high.” CBD products are available in various forms like oils and tinctures, capsules and pills, creams and lotions, vaping, and edibles.

CBD offers several therapeutic benefits to its users. Some of them are-

  • pain
  • anxiety
  • depression
  • some type of seizures
  • acne
  • addiction
  • inflammation

Now that we know CBD products and their benefits, let’s begin with CBD oils and tinctures.

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is one of the CBD products extracted from the seeds, flowers, and stalks of the hemp plant. CBD oils are the most potent and expensive form of CBD products. Apart from cannabinoids, users can also find fatty acids, protein, nutrients, and essential vitamins in these oils. “These oils are typically extracted from a process called supercritical CO2, which maintains the quality, sustainability, and bioavailability of the plant,” says Russell Markus. To ensure more natural consumption, nowadays, many people infuse CBD oils in food and drink recipes. Due to the intense potency of the substance, two or three teaspoons full of CBD oil are enough for a day. However, the exact CBD dose depends on several factors.

CBD Oil Ingredients-

CBD oils are comprised of base oils or carrier oils. Leading to the dilution of CBD, these base oils make it easier for the body to absorb CBD. These oils are made up of:

  • Coconut oil;
  • MCT oil;
  • Vegetable glycerin base; and
  • Hemp seed oil

What is CBD tincture?

The word ‘tincture’ indicates any medication that’s kept in an alcohol arrangement. CBD tinctures are different from CBD oils. While derived from hemp, they are not the same. Tinctures are necessarily the liquid extracts of hemp combined with a mixture of alcohol, glycerin, or cinnamon/ peppermint oil. “CBD in alcohol-based liquids will often contain approximately 60 to 70 percent alcohol,” says Russell Markus. You can consume CBD tinctures in the same way as CBD oils, that is, sublingually. The potency of CBD is lower in CBD tinctures than in CBD oils. Tinctures have a longer shelf life but exude a very bitter taste unless given a good flavor. They possess a higher bioavailability as compared to CBD oils. Its dosage varies from one person to another. It serves itself as a preservative, and one can also cook food with water-soluble CBD, which offers a faster absorption rate. Now, let’s consider its ingredients:

CBD Tincture Ingredients-

As compared to oil, the ratio of CBD is lower in tinctures. The main reason behind this is other substances being added to make its flavor better. Its main ingredients are:

  • Necessary Vitamins like B12, D, C, etc.
  • Water;
  • Herbs;
  • Melatonin;
  • Sweeteners; and
  • Essential Oils like basil, lavender, etc.

Difference between CBD oil and tinctures

Here are some factors that can help differentiate between CBD oils and CBD tinctures-

  • Base-

The first factor that indicates the difference between oil and tinctures is base. CBD contains cannabidiol as an oil base. While on the other hand, tinctures contain an alcohol base.

  • Ingestion method-

CBD oil can be directly applied to the skin, but rubbing a CBD tincture on your skin won’t have any benefit.

  • Taste-

CBD oils give an unpleasant oily after taste when consumed orally. On the other hand, tinctures come in various flavors like chocolate, peach, vanilla, etc. They even offer quicker absorption when taken sublingually.

  • Price-

Strength, potency, extraction method, etc., are the various factors on which the price of any CBD product usually depends. Generally, CBD oil and tincture price ranges the same, but high-quality CBD oil is more expensive than a tincture.

  • Shelf Life-

CBD tinctures offer a longer life than oil as it is made up of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, which plays a preservative role. When CBD oil expires, it sights a cloudy or foggy thing in the oil, which we can spot easily. To ensure a longer life span of any CBD product, one should keep them away from direct sunlight.

Is one better than the other?

“While some might select CBD oil because the taste of an alcohol-based tincture puts them off, others might select an alcohol-based tincture due to stomach sensitivities of ingesting oil,” says Russell Markus. Both CBD oils and tinctures can be helpful. The most significant difference between oil and tincture is the production process and their base management. To decide which one is better for you, it’s essential to understand your needs and preferences. CBD oil often contains lesser ingredients than a tincture, and if you’re sensitive to alcohol, the oil will be a better choice for you.

How do you consume CBD oils and tinctures?

While you can take CBD oils orally, CBD tinctures are taken sublingually or under the tongue. You can also add them to food and drink for oral ingestion. Depending on the carrier oil, you can also use some CBD oils topically.

As it’s evident that CBD oils and tinctures are very different from each other though they have some similarities. Now it’s up to you to decide which one will be the better option for you. No matter whatever you choose, CBD products will help you anyway.
