There is no single worldwide survey that can definitively rank every Pokémon from first to fiftieth. The best-known large-scale official vote was Pokémon of the Year 2020, conducted through Google from February 5 to February 14, 2020.
That vote included 890 Pokémon available at the time and divided them into eight categories based on the region where each Pokémon was first discovered. More than 6.6 million votes were cast worldwide, with Greninja finishing first overall with 140,559 votes, followed by Lucario with 102,259 and Mimikyu with 99,077.

2. Charizard

The gap between Greninja and second-place Lucario was 38,300 votes. The results also show that popularity does not simply follow age: several newer Pokémon performed better than famous Generation I characters.

Greninja’s first-place overall result is particularly notable because it came from Generation VI. The result demonstrates that a Pokémon does not need to belong to the original generation to develop an enormous worldwide fan base.
Why Pikachu Is Not #1 in the 2020 Official Vote
This is one of the most interesting points when discussing Pokémon popularity.
Pikachu is the franchise mascot, but it finished 19th in the 2020 official vote. That does not mean it suddenly became less important than Greninja or Lucario.
A popularity vote measures how people answered a specific question during a specific period. It does not measure worldwide brand recognition, merchandise sales, anime exposure, TCG appearances or how many people can identify a character.
The distinction becomes even clearer when looking at the Pokémon TCG community. A 2025 Elite Fourum discussion produced very different opinions about which Pokémon were most popular based on card prices, recent demand, historical collecting and promotional cards. Several participants specifically argued that popularity and card value should not be treated as identical measurements.
Popularity vs. Pokémon TCG Value
The Pokémon Trading Card Game provides another useful but imperfect way to examine character popularity.
Some Pokémon have expensive cards because they are extremely popular. Others can have expensive cards because the card is rare, difficult to obtain, old, historically significant or printed in limited quantities.
This is why a high-value card should not automatically be interpreted as proof that its Pokémon is more popular.
The 2025 Elite Fourum discussion illustrates this problem. Participants debated Pikachu, Charizard, Umbreon, Rayquaza, Lugia, Gengar, Mew, Mewtwo, Blastoise and others, while also pointing out that supply, rarity, release history and card type can heavily influence prices.
For example, one contributor noted that the highest individual sale values included Pokémon such as Charizard, Blastoise, Pikachu and Umbreon, but also emphasized that price is not the same thing as popularity.
Pokémon Popularity in 2026
The franchise has reached another major milestone in 2026: its 30th anniversary.
The Pokémon Company began its 30-year celebration in February 2026, with events and activities built around fans sharing their favorite Pokémon.
The anniversary is also visible in the Pokémon TCG. The 30th Celebration expansion launched in September 2026 with more than 150 cards, 30 Pikachu rare cards and a Classic Collection featuring iconic cards from Pokémon’s history.
The Pokémon Company also reports that, as of the end of March 2026, Pokémon-related video game software shipments had surpassed 489 million units and the Pokémon TCG had produced more than 75 billion cards as of March 2025. The figures show the enormous scale of the franchise, although they do not directly rank individual Pokémon.
