OSRS – How Does the Grand Exchange Work?

What is the Grand Exchange?

The Grand Exchange (GE) is a place in which players can access a trading system in OSRS. Here you can buy and sell items that are tradable within the game. You have eight GE slots that you can use for buying or selling items. If you are using a free-to-play account, then you only get three.

You don’t need to advertise, wait, or even meet others when waiting for a trade to finish on the Grand Exchange. Where is the Grand Exchange?

You can find the Grand Exchange to the north-west of Varrock, and to the east of Edgeville. If you find yourself in the Wilderness, then you can simply head south to either of these places to get your bearings.

How Does it Work?

What actually goes on within the GE isn’t known to the public, but how it operates on the surface can be discovered as you experience more of the game. You basically interact with GE by buying and selling using offers for items that you wish to purchase or trade. The success of a trade is dependant on when the buy offer is level or higher than what the selling offer is.

The amount that the item is successfully traded for depends on who made the first offer. If a buy offer comes in and lower sale offers are there, then the trade goes through between the lowest sell offer, with the buyer getting back their OSRS gold. Meanwhile, if there is a sell offer made with higher buy offers existing, then the trade will be successful between the highest buy offer, after with the seller will get more OSRS GP than what they’re offering.

There is also volume to consider. The volume is measured on the amount of the items that are being traded over on the GE. There isn’t an official publication of this number in the game itself, but you can go onto the official Old School Runescape Grand Exchange website database to get a look at the information you’re seeking.

There are a number of different kinds of OSRS items that have high volumes on a daily basis. These tend to be supplied which involve ores and runes. Ranged weapons are also commonly found on the list of items with a high volume. These include arrows, cannonballs, and darts.

What are the Limits on Purchases?

If you are heading down to you the GE in the hopes of picking up a Twisted Bow or a few other items you need, then you need to keep in mind that there are some restrictions. Every four hours, the rate of purchasing is restricted. What this restriction is depended entirely on the item and what the limit is that’s connected to it. This means that you can only buy a certain amount of that OSRS item at that time.

Are There Items You Can’t Trade?

Non-tradeable items do exist in OSRS where the GE is concerned. IF you do want to still trade such items, you can do so still when trading directly with players. Items like burnt foods for example have no value because they can’t be traded. Other items like jewellery that isn’t fully charged, half-eaten items, recipe resources, and certain other equipment can’t be traded.
